Trek Suitability
For those who want to join, should be:
  • Fit and active traveller as it is a challenging walk. The most parts of the trail are over rocky terrain that makes the hike more demanding. There are big ascends and descends, big distances as well. Passing the Koncheto saddle requires good shape and excellent head for heights.
  • Ready to spend 8 nights in mountain huts and one night in a room at the Rila Monastery. Each night the accommodation is in a different place so it is important to pack light.
  • Walk 9 days (5-9 hours) up to 24 km each day. The hike in the central part is over a stony ground and will take 9 hours.

Difficulty: It is a trail for advanced hikers. The length of the walk requires good shape and excellent head for heights. You should be ready to overcome every day 1000 m ascending and 1000 m descending on average, some of the distances are long, 17-24 km. The Koncheto saddle is narrow and stony, but helped by metal ropes.

Accommodation: The huts are well-maintained; the hut-keepers offer food and beverages. The huts are frequently visited, so you need to book the beds in advance. Please, have in mind that the conditions are basic: beds are in common rooms and not every hut offers hot shower. The Rila Monastery is a working monastery and you should respect the rules.

Transport:

  • To the starting point: There is no public transport to the resort of Panichishte. You can use a taxi from Sapareva Banya, the village that is served by a bus line from Doupnitsa town that is connected with Sofia by buses and trains.
  • From the finishing point: There are buses that connect the town of Melnik with the city of Sofia.

Security: The trail is totally secure. The most part of the trail is along well maintained hiking trails as it is part of the E4. Nevertheless, we recommend using a navigation application on the mobile phone or a real GPS device. The area is served by the mountain rescue teams.
