Days 9 Average data per day: Distance 15 km/day Ascent 1000 m/day Descent 1000 m/day
This multi-day trail leads you into the most beautiful and awe-inspiring mountains in Bulgaria: the Rila Mountains and the Pirin Mountains. These neighbouring mountains are connected by the saddle of Predela that makes possible their tour on foot. Thus, in nine days you will immerse into the wild and preserved nature of those high lands. The landscape of the walk is an amazing combination between splendid ancient forests, deep valleys, terraced cirques with many shimmering lakes and rugged peaks. Most of this trail is part of the E4 trans-European long-distance walking path.
Nine-day hut to hut hike in the most beautiful areas of Rina and Pirin mountains;
To be leaded by experienced guide (if guided option is chosen);
Easy orienting (for the self-guided option);
To spend the nights at warm and cozy huts;
Breakfast and dinner provided by the hut-keepers;
Difficulty: It is a trail for advanced hikers. The length of the walk requires good shape and excellent head for heights. You should be ready to overcome every day 1000 m ascending and 1000 m descending on average, some of the distances are long, 17-24 km. The Koncheto saddle is narrow and stony, but helped by metal ropes.
Accommodation: The huts are well-maintained; the hut-keepers offer food and beverages. The huts are frequently visited, so you need to book the beds in advance. Please, have in mind that the conditions are basic: beds are in common rooms and not every hut offers hot shower. The Rila Monastery is a working monastery and you should respect the rules.
Transport:
Security: The trail is totally secure. The most part of the trail is along well maintained hiking trails as it is part of the E4. Nevertheless, we recommend using a navigation application on the mobile phone or a real GPS device. The area is served by the mountain rescue teams.

Walk from the resort of Panichishte to the hut Vazov through the area of the famous Seven Rila Lakes. During the day you will pass a splendid trail, winding along the Seven Rila Lakes. They are group of glacial lakes scattered around the steps in a huge rocky “amphitheatre” and surrounded by cragged peaks. The other group of lakes, Urdini Lakes, could be seen from Razdela area by making a short diversion to the peak of Damga (Vazov). The walk continues along the ridge Otovitsa from where you can see all the Seven Lakes from above.
Walk from the hut Vazov to the Rila Monastery. This is a long descending to the valley of Rilska river, where is located one of the landmarks of the Rila Mountain-the Rila Monastery. Walking along an open ridge, you will have a nice panorama all day long towards the adverse slopes and peaks. Settled deep into the heart of the mountain, the Monastery is the most prominent Bulgarian historical site. A calm night in the holy place is a pleasant experience.
Walk from the Rila Monastery to the hut Macedonia. It is a long and pleasant hike along the rivers Rilska and Iliyna at the heart of the mountain. Gradually the path climbs up to one of the main ridges of Rila and leads to the hut Makedonia settled on a saddle at the height of 2160 m above sea level.
This is a long hike from the hut Makedonia to the area of Predela, the saddle between the two mountains Rila and Pirin. The path follows the southernmost ridge of Rila and after the last peak above 2000 m, Kaptnik, the path drops down steeply to the Predela hut.
This is the first hike in the Pirin Mountain. It starts with a walk along a road to reach the highest point of the saddle, Kulata, from where starts a steep ascend traversing the northern flanks of Pirin. Passing through a pine forest, the path climbs up above the tree-line and reaches the area of the lake Dautovo. A diversion on the right leads to the lake. Continuing down, the trail enters again in the forest and reaches the hut Yavorov.
Walk from the Yavorov hut to the Vihren hut. This part is the most imposing and unforgettable section of the whole trail. It is a hike along the main crest of the Pirin Mountain. You will traverse the most famous ridge-walk in Bulgaria-the Koncheto, a narrow marble ridge that is supported by metal ropes. Once on the saddle after the Koncheto, you will have the choice to climb up the peak of Vihren-the highest peak in the Pirin or just to continue down after admiring of the mighty peak.
Walk from the Vihren hut to the Tevnoto Ezero hut. It is a long hike to Tevno Ezero shelter, but arguably be the most panoramic path in Pirin. You will see a lot of groups of lakes in the very heart of the mountain. The hut Tevno Lake itself is very beautifully settled at the edge of the Tevno Lake. Following the main crest of the mountain, you will have stunning views towards the deep cirques containing lakes with cold emerald green water.
The walk from the Tevnoto lake hut to the hut Pirin is a pleasant hike down that gradually leaves the rocky part of the mountain and enters the forested part of Pirin. It passes by the lakes Mitrovo and Argirovo and following the course of the river at the bottom of the deep valley, leads to the hut Pirin.
The last day is a walk from the hut Pirin to the small town of Melnik. Going down you will zigzag through the gully of sandstone pyramids next to the Melnik town.
If you prefer to explore the mountain at your own pace, than chose the option “Self-guided trip”. In this case we will provide you a package of materials, including a written hike description together with a customized travel itinerary, GPS tracks of your trail and local information. In order to make your independent hiking tour a success we will do all of the necessary arrangements. That is why the accommodations in the package are prepaid.
