The Seven Rila Lakes - Rila Monastery

Days 3 Distance 35 km Ascent 2400 m Descent 2030 m Difficulty level 3/5

If you have only 3 days for hiking in the Rila National Park this trail is the best choice as it offers splendid panoramas in the Mountains and the area of the Seven Rila Lakes. It passes through the Rila Monastery. Arguably these are the most famous landmarks in Bulgaria. The strength that it requires is at middle level. The accommodation is at huts that offer food. There is the option at the end of the Day 3 to spend the night at the Monastery.

What to expect:

Three-day hut to hut hike in the Rila National Park;
To be leaded by experienced guide (if guided option is chosen);
Easy orienting (for the self-guided option);
To spend two nights in high mountain huts;
Breakfast and dinner provided by the hut-keeper.

Trip Highlights
  • A walk and two nights in the area of the Seven Rila Lakes;
  • A visit of The Rila Monastery, the most impressive monastery complex in Bulgaria;
  • The starting point of the walk is the village of Sapareva Banya, famous from the hot mineral water.
Trek Suitability
For those who want to join, should be:
  • Fit and active traveller. Part of the trail is over rocky terrain that makes the hike more challenging.
  • Ready to spend 2 nights in the heart of the mountain. Each night the accommodation is in a different hut so it is important to pack light.
  • Walk 3 days (5-6 hours) up to 14 km each day over a roughs ground.
Difficulty: Despite the fact that the trail is at the most Alpine part of the mountains, it is without steep ascends and descends, but the first day the ascending is prolong and the third day the descend is lengthen. The distances of the walk are moderate and there is plenty of time to relax at the edge of the lakes, engulfing the tranquillity of the nature.

Accommodation: The hut Vazov is well-maintained; the hut-keeper offers food and beverages. The hut is frequently visited, so you need to book the beds in advance. The hut of Skakavitsa is basic, but offers food and blankets.

Transport: The village of Sapareva Banya is easily reachable from the capital city Sofia by buses, direct or through the town of Dupnitsa. The Rila Monastery is connected by buses with the towns of Rila, Blagoevgrad and Dupnitsa, from where you can continue to Sofia.

Security: The trail is totally secure. It is along well marked paths. Nevertheless, we recommend the using of a navigation application on the mobile phone or a real GPS device. The area is served by the mountain rescue teams.
