Musala Tour

Days 3 Distance 35 km Ascent 2370 m Descent 2370 m Difficulty level 4/5

This three-day loop at the highest part of the Rila Mountain combines walks through all its magical features: a splendid forest walk, a hike along the edge of a terraced cirque with several shimmering lakes and above all- an ascend of the highest peak of the mountain- the peak of Musala (2925m)

What to expect:

Three-day hut to hut hike in the Rila National Park;
To be leaded by experienced guide (if guided option is chosen);
Easy orienting (for the self-guided option);
To spend two nights in high mountain huts that offer basic conditions;
Breakfast and dinner provided by the hut-keepers.

Trip Highlights
  • A rise to the highest peak of the Balkan Peninsula;
  • A walk along the wild Marichini Lakes, the watershed of the river Maritsa;
  • The starting and the finishing point of the walk could be helped by lift.
Trek Suitability
For those who want to join, should be:
  • Fit and active traveller. Part of the trail is steep and over rocky terrain that makes the hike more challenging.
  • Ready to spend 2 nights in the heart of the mountain. Each night the accommodation is in a different hut so it is important to pack light.
  • Walk 3 days (4-6 hours) up to 14 km each day over a roughs ground.
Difficulty: Despite the fact that the trail is at the most Alpine part of the mountains, it is doable by every fit and experienced hiker. The second day there is a steep ascends to the peak of Musala. But the length of the walk is 11 km and there is plenty of time to relax at the edge of the lakes, engulfing the tranquillity of the nature. The walk could be helped by the chair-lift Sitnyakovo the first day that saves you 500 m ascending. The last day could be substitute by the cabin-lift Yastrebets to the resort Borovets.

Accommodation: The hut Maritsa is basic but the hut-keeper is welcome and offers food and beverages. The hut Musala is also basic, but as it is frequently visited, you need to book the beds in advance.

Transport: To/from the starting point: There is a regular bus line that connects the capital Sofia with the town of Samokov. From Samokov there are regular buses that go to the resort of Borovets

Security: The trail is totally secure. It is along well marked paths. Nevertheless, we recommend the using of a navigation application on the mobile phone or a real GPS device. The area is served by the mountain rescue teams.
