Pirin - Around the Lakes

 Days 5    Distance 38 km    Ascent 3641 m   Descent 3641 m  Difficulty level 3/5

This five-day hut to hut walk leads you around the glacier lakes of the Pirin Mountains. There is no peak climbing, but at the same time it is spectacular all the time. The cirques of the Pirin Mountains are famous for their beauty especially for the clear water lakes that are scattered around the majestic pyramidal peaks. This walk will give the experience to camp at the height above 2500 m near the Tevno Lake and its small hut there, to glimpse the Sinanishko Lake and to visit the Kremenski Lakes, string of three glacier lakes that became the icon of the Mountains.
What to expect:

Five-day hut to hut hike along lakes;
To be leaded by experienced guide (if guided option is chosen);
To spend the nights at warm and cozy huts;
Breakfast and dinner provided by the hut-keepers;

Trip Highlights
  • It is in the heart of a Pirim Mountains with unique combination of lakes;
  • The huts are ones of the best and welcome huts in Bulgaria;
  • The starting / finishing points are easily reached from Sofia and Plovdiv.
Trek Suitability
For those who want to join, should be:
  • Fit and active traveller. Most of the trail is over rocky terrain that makes the hike more challenging.
  • Ready to spend 4 nights in mountain huts. Each night the accommodation is in a different hut so it is important to pack light.
  • Walk 5 days (4-6 hours) up to 11 km each day over a stony ground.

Difficulty: Despite the fact that the trail is at the heart of the mountains, it is gentle, without big ascends and descends, the length of the walk is moderate and there is plenty of time to relax at the edge of the lakes, engulfing the tranquillity of the nature. What makes the hike challenging is the rough terrain and some steep parts typical for Pirin mountain.

Accommodation: The huts are well-maintained; the hut-keepers offer food and beverages. The huts are frequently visited, so you need to book the beds in advance. The Spano pole is a favourite to all tourists due to its welcoming hosts. Despite this fact, have in mind that these are high mountain huts and the conditions are basic: beds in common rooms in some huts, no hot shower in each hut and shared WC.

Transport:There are mini-buses from the town of Bansko to the hut Vihren.

Security: The trail is totally secure. The most part of the trail is along well marked paths. Nevertheless, we recommend using a navigation application on the mobile phone or a real GPS device. The area is served by the mountain rescue teams.
